Arcata Community Forest

Driving Directions: The Arcata Community Forest is located on the east side of the City of Arcata. It is accessible from Redwood Park located at the east ends of 11th and 14th Streets; on the southern side from Fickle Hill Road, which begins at the east end of 11th and 7th Streets at Bayside Road; and from the east end of California Street which connnects with L.K. Wood Blvd. north of Humboldt State University.

Clam Beach
Parking: Large enough to easily accomodate several trailers, with fairly easy turn around capabilities.
Length: Many miles of beach front riding.
Conditions:  Beach and dunes, with some railroad tracks and a bridge. Dogs allowed. Restrooms are located at the trailhead.
Driving Directions: From Highway 101 take the Clam Beach Road exit (Near McKinleyville) and go left under the overpass. You will see the parking lot and trail head.

Stinky Beach
Parking: Large enough to easily accomodate several trailers, with easy turn around capabilities.
Length: Approximately 3 mi from the parking lot to the end of the peninsula and and back.
Conditions: Beach and dunes, with some railroad tracks and a bridge. Dogs allowed. No facilities. Beach is located near the old tallow works, hence the name Stinky Beach. The tallow works has been closed for many years, as a result, the beach is no longer stinky.
Driving Directions: From Highway 101, take the Herrick Avenue/Elk River Road exit. Turn towards the bay. There will be a Park and Ride parking lot on the right, park there. Follow the road to the end, past the old tallow mill. Turn left at the railroad tracks, and follow them until you cross over a bridge. Once over the bridge, go off of the tracks and to the right.

South Jetty
Parking: Large parking lot.
Length:
Conditions: Beach and Dunes. Dogs are allowed. Restrooms are located at the parking lot.
Driving Directions: From Highway 101 take the Loleta Drive exit. Follow Loleta Drive through the town of Loleta and turn right onto Eel River Drive. Take a left onto Copenhagen Road and follow it until it merges with Table Bluff Road. Take a left onto Table Bluff Road, follow it down the bluffs until you reach the beach. Parking lot and beach access is located directly at the bottom of the bluff.

Centerville Beach
Parking: Not much room to park a trailer, let alone turn one around, but it can be done. If you do not like backing up, this parking lot is not for you. Best to have 4 wheel drive in the wet months, to be on the safe side.
Length: If you head North beach access is available for around 10 miles, when you reach the mouth of the Eel River. Beach access to the South is limited and affected by high and low tides.
Conditions: Beach and dunes. A portable toilet is available during the summer months. Dogs are allowed.
Driving Directions: From Highway 101, take the Ferndale/Fernbridge Exit. Cross over Fernbridge, and head into Ferndale. In Ferndale, turn right onto Centerville Road. (Look for the Ivanhoe Restaraunt and Hotel and the Petrolia/Centerville sign). Follow Centerville Road to the parking lot.

King Range

Driving Directions:
North Access: U.S. 101 to the Ferndale exit. Once in Ferndale, follow signs to Petrolia. One mile past Petrolia, turn right on Lighthouse Road; it is 5 more miles to the Mattole Recreation Site. Allow 1 1/2 hours for the 42 mile trip. 
Central Access: U.S. 101 to South Fork - Honeydew exit. Follow the signs to Honeydew (23 Miles). Turn left in Honeydew to Honeydew Creek Recreation Site and Smith-Etter Road. Allow 1 hour for the 24 mile trip.
South Access: U.S. 101 to the Redway/Garberville exit. Follow signs to Shelter Cove/King Range NCA. Allow 45 minutes for the 22 mile trip to Shelter Cove.

The Mill Creek Trail
Parking: Plenty of parking and turn-around space at the Mill Creek campground and trailhead.
Length: 7.5 mile trail. Please note that this trail closesfor part of the year to allow protected spawing of several species of Salmon. An alternative route is available! Please click here for a map of the trails and alternative routes.
Conditions: Strenuous, numerous steep grades and switchbacks. Dogs are not allowed. No restrooms available.
Driving Directions: From Highway 101, at the south end of Crescent City, turn east on Elk Valley Road. After 1.5 miles, fork right on Howland Hill Road and then turn right onto Bertsch Road. The trail head is on your immediate left.

Little Bald Hills Trail
Parking:
Length: Trail length is 8 miles to the Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park boundary, from there, an additional 5 miles on the Paradise Flat Trail (Smith River National Recreation Area) to South Fork Road. A primitive backcountry campsite is located 3.3 miles East of the trailhead.
Conditions: Strenuous, steep grades and switchbacks, 1,800 foot rise in elevation. Dogs are not allowed. No restrooms available.
Driving Directions: From Highway 101, at the south end of Crescent City, turn east on Elk Valley Road. After 1.5 miles, fork right on Howland Hill Road and look for the signed trailhead located on the South side of the road.

Stanshaw
Parking: Good parking at campgrounds.
Length: Misc.
Conditions: Generally snow on trails until late June, trails are maintained in early July.
Driving Directions:
Stanshaw Meadows Trail Head directions, heading North on Hwy. 96 (Klamath River Hwy.) from Orleans:

Follow Hwy. 96 North along the Klamath River and past Dillon Campground. Once you cross the Salmon River bridge, continue for 12 miles on Highway 96 until you reach the turnoff to the TiBar Work Station. Turn at the work station onto TiBar Rd. (watch for sign), and follow this road, also known as 13N11.From TiBar Rd. take FS road 14N01. Follow signs to the look-out for awhile, and make sure that you stay on FS road 14N01 for quite a ways (well over 10 miles).

Just before the Ten Bear Trailhead, the road makes a sharp turn to the left (don't take the dirt road going straight ahead) and the road turns into FS road 15N17. Stay on 15N17 going past Ten Bear TH and continue a couple more miles to Stanshaw Trailhead.

There are a lot of roads turning off these roads, so watch the FS road # signs, stay alert and have your map handy.

Carter Meadows Camp and Trailhead
Parking: Plenty of room to park several trailers and turn around even a large horse trailer.
Length:
One trail heads up the mountain and connects with the Pacific Crest Trail within about 1/2 mile. The Hidden Lake Trail takes a sharp right hand turn here and continues on into Hidden Lake, which is about 3/4 of a mile from here. There is also a Carter Meadows trail that interconnects this trail head with the Group Horse Camp, Hidden Horse Camp, the Trail Gulch Trail Head, the Long Gulch Trail Head and to the Fish Lake Trail Head road.
Conditions: There are many trails that lead from this trail head. They vary in condition. In the camp there are nice pipe corrals, outhouses, hitching rails, and drinking water. Reservations are required for camping, please call 1-530-468-5351. The trail head is located 3/4 of a mile up the road from the Carter Meadows Camp, no reservations or fees are required to use the trailhead.
Driving Directions: (From Callahan, Ca) At the North end of Callahan, at the bridge, turn onto the Callahan-Cecilville Road at the bridge. Follow that road up to the summit (where you will cross the Pacific Crest Trail) and about a 1/2 mile down the other side, turn left onto the Carter Meadow dirt road.

Jorstad's Cabin
Parking: Accessable through the Hobo Gulch trailhead and campground.
Length: Trail is 9mi. long.
Conditions: Trails range from moderate to steep and travel through wooded areas and snakes along the Trinity River. No forage available, pack in feed for stock.

Cuneo Creek (Humboldt Redwoods State Park)
Parking: Paved turn arounds inside the campground.
Length: Visitors can access Indian Orchard Trail or the Homestead Trail directly from Cuneo Creek. These trails offer connections to other trails in the park for a longer ride. See the trail map for more detailed information.
Conditions: Trails range from moderate to steep and travel through wooded areas, open fields, and Redwood forests. There are a few water crossings and bridges on certain trails. Dogs are allowed in the camp but not on trails. Restrooms are available in the camp. Reservations needed to camp.
Driving Directions:
From the north: From Highway 101, take the Honeydew/South Fork exit. Turn right at the intersection at the bottom of the offramp. You are now on the Mattole Road. Drive about eight miles on this road and you will see the Cuneo Creek Horse Campground sign. Turn right and drive in the entrance road until you arrive at the campground.
From the south: From Highway 101, take the South Fork/Founders Tree exit. At the intersection with the Avenue of the Giants, turn left. Drive over the bridge above the Eel River. On the other side of the bridge is a sign indicating Honeydew and Rockefeller Forest. Turn left there and go under the freeway underpass. You are now on the Mattole Road. Drive about eight miles on this road and you will see the Cuneo Creek Horse Campground sign. Turn right and drive in the entrance road until you arrive at the campground.

Hobo Gulch Trailhead and Campground
Parking: Features a large campground with plenty of parking.
Length: The ultimate destinations from Hobo Gulch trailhead are either Papoose Lake or Grizzly Lake, both glaciated lakes carved out of granite. Both of these alpine lakes are well worth reaching because of their extraordinary amphitheater-like settings and solitude. Papoose Lake is about 13 miles away, while Grizzly Lake is about 17 miles away. Closer destinations exist between these lakes such as Rattlesnake Camp right along the North Fork of the Trinity River (4 miles from the trailhead) or Jorstad's Cabin (8 miles from the trailhead).
Conditions: No corrals (bring highline or tie to trailer). High-altitude wilderness. Dogs are allowed. No animals, equine or canine, allowed in camp. No facilities exist. Map. Info.
Driving Directions: Traveling West on Highway 299 exit left at the turnoff signed Old Helena. Travel North past the Old Helena townsite. The narrow paved road continues North, turn right after sign onto East Fork Road and go 3.8 miles to Hobo Gulch Trailhead sign.  Bear left at sign onto Forest Service Rt. 34N07Y (dirt) and go 12.2 miles to campground. This rustic, tent-only, pack it in, pack it out, very secluded campground stretches along the North Fork of Trinity River and is surrounded by Trinity Alps Wilderness. The only water avaiable is from the river and should be treated before use. There are two pit toilets in the campground. The campground is open May 15 through October 31.

Orick (Redwood Creek Horse Trail)
Parking:
Length: This trail comprises four possible loops and two stock-ready camps. Several days of riding are possible.
Conditions:
Driving Directions: The Redwood Creek Horse Trail begins in Orick next to the Orick Rodeo Grounds off Highway 101, about 1 mile north of the Thomas H. Kuchel Visitor Center.

Hammond trail
Parking: Room for several trailers, with plenty of turn around room.
Length: The trail presently consists of a 2.4 mile hiking/biking/equestrian trail linking Arcata with McKinleyville from the Arcata Bottoms to Murray Road in McKinleyville, plus a hiking/equestrian loop north of Murray Road.
Conditions: Dogs are allowed. No restrooms.
Driving Directions: Located between Arcata and McKinleyville. Access the trail from the south in Arcata: Take Hwy. 101 to Giuntoli Lane exit 2 miles north of Arcata, and go west on Janes Road. Follow signs to Mad River Beach, park at the pedestrian bridge. Midway McKinleyville: Take the Murray or School Road due west. North: Take the Clam Beach exit off Highway 101. Look for trail.

Mad River Beach
Parking: 1 large paved parking area, 1 large sand parking area closer to beach.
Length: Many miles of dunes and beach front access.
Conditions: Beach and dunes. Dogs are allowed. Restroom at parking lot.
Driving Directions: From Giuntoli Lane in Arcata turn onto Heindon Road, Left onto Miller Lane, right onto Mad River Road. Follow signs to beach access.
