Monthly Meetings

A general membership meeting is held once a month, except in December. Monthly meetings are open to the public.

Monthly Rides

We try to schedule a monthly ride to explore local public lands where equine use is appropriate. Usually held on the third Saturday or Sunday of each month.

Member Education

The Redwood Unit is dedicated to educating its members. Several times a year, we hold events to educate our members.

The Redwood Unit likes to increase public awareness by participating in local parades. Its also neat to see a pack train winding through town!

Pack Clinic/Trail Obstacle Challenge

Held in Februrary at the Ferndale Fairgrounds, this is a chance for the public to come learn how to pack a mule, set up a highline, and camp with minimum impact.

Redwood Unit members at the Rendezvous.

March is a time when our Redwood Unit gathers with all of the other Backcountry Horsemen Units from throughout the state of California. It is a chance to learn Gentle Use camping and stock handling techniques. We all share a common value in caring for our stock and the land we ride.

Half Ass Flat Ride

The Half Ass Flat Ride (HAFR) is one of the Unit’s main events and our major fundraiser. We have received many compliments on this ride in Capetown, CA. on the last full weekend in June. The HAFR is a catered three day event. We lead rides along the beach and other rides climb hills, to get great views of the Pacific Ocean from atop the grassy bluffs. We have a big raffle, enjoy a tasty dinner of Tri-Tip and local oysters, and dance to a Country Western Band on Saturday night.

Work Parties

The Redwood Unit is involved in several public service projects. Our members volunteer their time, effort, animals, tools and more to help maintain equine trails on our public lands.

Two of our annual project areas are the Stanshaw and Ten Bear trails and campsites in the Marble Mountains.

Membership Drive Ride

An annual ride held in October. New members are enticed to join the unit with this weekend long ride in some of Northern California's most beautiful backcountry.

Cowboy Canned Food Convoy

The Redwood Unit's Holiday food drive. All donated foods are gathered and delivered via horseback and pack animal. Held in November.
